I-275 Updates

As you may know by now, the TPO Board rejected our motion to remove funding for I-275 expansion from Hillsborough to Bearss from the Long Range Transportation Plan. In the end, we were unable to sway any votes from the members of the TPO Board who favored the project.

That doesn't mean your voices weren't heard, though. TPO Board member Andy Ross, mayor of Temple Terrace, in particular made clear his annoyance at having received so many emails in opposition; alas, he also made clear he puts the interests of people living in Pasco and Pinellas Counties ahead of ours.

This doesn't mean we're done fighting, though. In the coming months we'll be organizing to address the prominent issue of the TPO Board containing so many voting members who are not elected officials; as it stands, the Expressway Authority, TPA, Port Tampa Bay, and Planning Commission all have control over how our tax dollars are spent without being accountable to voters. Stay tuned, as we're going to shake things up in whatever way is possible—and sooner rather than later, as the new makeup of the County Commission has promised to be even more hostile to neighborhoods as the previous one.

This Month In OSHNA History

It was this month 30 years ago that the Tampa Tribune featured Old Seminole Heights and the efforts taking place to preserve our historic homes. It came on the heels of our neighborhood's successful application to be recognized as a National Historic District—spearheaded by the Old Seminole Heights Preservation Committee, OSHNA's predecessor.

The OSHPC's president then was Pat Kemp, who later this month will end her eight year tenure as a Hillsborough County Commissioner. During her time on the BOCC, Pat has been as tireless an advocate for Tampa's neighborhoods as she was during the founding and development of our own neighborhood association. To this day, we have Pat Kemp & the other members of the OSHPC to thank for saving our stretch of the neighborhood between Central and Ola—despite what looked like overwhelming odds.

It's easy to take for granted all the benefits of living here, but we simply wouldn't have them if not for the extraordinary efforts of neighbors in the 1990s to create a livable Old Seminole Heights.

We've been proud to have one of our own representing OSHNA with Hillsborough County, We're sad to see Pat leave formal public office but we're all sure this is far from the end and she'll be representing us again somewhere very soon!
