Stormwater Project Updates
  • A community meeting with Nelson and, hopefully, city staff is taking place September 27, from 6-8 at the Garden Center, 5800 N. Central Ave. We hope to see you there. Nelson also provided an update on the project last week to City Council.

Other updates from the project:

Florida Avenue

  • We are waiting for rebar from our rebar fabrication shop. Once this rebar arrives, hopefully in the next two weeks, we will be able to begin work on the stormwater curb inlet tops. FDOT added a sixth inlet top to the list they need replaced.
  • Once the inlet work is complete, we will schedule the repaving of Florida Ave. This work will be done at night under a full road closure and will be posted at least two (2) weeks in advance, per FDOT’s requirements.

Central Avenue south of Hillsborough Avenue

  • The final lift of asphalt has been installed from Hillsborough Avenue to south of Osborne Avenue. Temporary striping has been placed until the asphalt has cured, allowing for final striping and the placement of decorative crosswalks on all side streets.
  • The decorative crosswalks on the side streets will start at night the week of August 14th, followed by the permanent striping the following week.
  • Some new street signs have been ordered and will be installed mid to late September.
  • Rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB’s) have been ordered for the Wilder Avenue crosswalk and will be installed as soon as they arrive.
  • The Osborne Avenue intersection still needs to be milled and repaved. This work should occur in late September.

Hanna Avenue

  • Hanna will be closed east of the school while we continue to install new utilities.
  • The 600 feet of sanitary sewer relocation is almost complete.
  • The storm is continuing to the edge of the Nebraska intersection. Our goal is to have Hanna repaved and open to traffic (all the way to Nebraska) by the end of October.
  • The opening of the Central/Hanna intersection before school starts back is a major feat considering the number of unforeseen obstacles that we encountered in this intersection with 80+ year old utilities. We encountered a 2 ft wide by 2 ft high terracotta pipe and concrete communications duct bank, storm structures that were buried and not matching the as-built plans, another storm structure poured around a 12” watermain that had to be cut away by a subcontractor with a concrete chain saw, a sanitary structure with an overpoured based that had to be removed and replaced, and asphalt that was 12+ inches thick, where it was shown to be only three to four inches thick. There were also multiple unknown utilities encountered that were not shown on the plans, each of which had to be investigated before continuing. All three of the new stormwater inlets had to be shifted from their original locations due to existing utilities that could not be moved within our timeframe. Each of these moves had to be coordinated and vetted by the Engineer of Record and the City’s Stormwater Department. All the grades in the intersection then had to change as well to account for the new locations and heights of the storm structures. We also added a valley gutter on the west side of the intersection to assist the drainage and added a 12” gate valve for the City’s water maintenance department that was not part of our original scope. All these challenges that were not anticipated, during the rainy season, stretched us for time and resources.

As always, we encourage you to sign up for the stormwater project updates here .
